Sitting the Law and Business exam in Spanish

CSLB publishes Spanish versions of ten of its most commonly taken examinations, and the Law and Business exam is one of them. In 2025 it was sat in Spanish 6,853 times, more than any other Spanish paper CSLB offers and more than three times the next one.

This is not a translator arrangement or an accommodation you apply for. It is a second edition of the same exam, and for the ten exams that have one, it is the edition you are given if you ask for language help at all.

The ten exams with a Spanish version

Most candidates sitting a Spanish trade paper are also sitting the Spanish law and business paper, which is why its number is the largest. The 2025 volumes behind the rest run from 1,869 for General Building down to 200 for Ceramic and Mosaic Tile.

Asking for a translator puts you into the Spanish version

CSLB’s rule on this is short and easy to miss. A candidate who requests a translator for one of those ten exams is required to take the Spanish version instead. You do not get an English paper with somebody reading it to you.

For every other trade exam, and for every language other than Spanish, the translator route is what is available: CSLB may allow a translator of your choosing to read the examination to you, and that translator has to be approved in advance.

If you do need a translator

The approval is a paper process with a real waiting time attached, so it is started early rather than after the sitting is booked. CSLB says its Examination Administration Unit reviews translator forms in the order they arrive and that this takes four to six weeks. Your application status page shows the progress as Screening Received, Screening Approved, Screening Denied or Screening Rejected, and a letter follows either way.

The rules inside the room are strict, and they are worth reading before the day rather than being surprised by:

• The translator brings valid, unexpired, government-issued photo identification, the same list the candidate uses. A translator who is a minor may present a current-year school identification card with a photograph.
• No translation tools of any kind. If the translator cannot translate a word, they say it in English. They may not define or explain a term.
• The translator is bound by the same list of prohibited items the candidate is.
• Every conversation between translator and candidate during the exam is monitored by PSI.
• A translator who prompts, coaches or assists in any way puts both people at risk of prosecution under Business and Professions Code sections 123 and 123.5, and the candidate’s application is denied under section 496. The candidate is then barred from any CSLB examination for one year from the test date.
• A translator who has translated once may not translate again for one year, so a candidate who fails needs a different translator for the retake.

Canceling with an approved translator goes through a different PSI line from an ordinary booking, and the same rule applies: PSI needs the cancellation two days before the appointment or the fee is forfeited.

What is the same either way

Everything else about the paper. Three and a half hours, on a computer at a PSI test center, multiple choice with four options and one best answer, closed book with a calculator provided, no penalty for guessing, and a result handed to you before you leave. The seven sections and their published shares are the same sections and the same shares.

CSLB has not published a separate pass rate for the Spanish editions, so nothing on this page says whether they pass at a different rate from the English ones.

Where this site stands
